Acrylic paint on painted wall
The Bergen Police contacted the Bergen Academy of Art and Design with a request for artwork in the police detention facilities.
I wanted to use the opportunity to explore questions of captivity and freedom and considered the process itself to be part of the artwork.
On the wall of a detention cell, I painted a window with the view from the apartment where I lived in Bergen. It was rendered at full scale in a naturalistic style. I wanted the window to be perceived as an illusion at first glance.
For several weeks I stood inside the cell painting while listening to the lives of detainees unfolding in the neighbouring cells.
