Black markers on painted wall
I was invited as an artist and architect by teachers from the Art, Design and Architecture program at Elvebakken Upper Secondary School to carry out a SKUP project. SKUP is a collaboration between schools, artists, OsloMet, and Den Kulturelle Skolesekken, with the primary objective of embedding art and culture in everyday school life.
The teachers wanted a project that connected the disciplines of art and architecture and challenged students to work creatively.
One part of the project involved creating a collaborative wall drawing with students from the Art, Design and Architecture program (KDA), Year 2. The project involved 58 students.
I presented images of my wall drawings and shared my experiences of working directly on walls using black markers. I focused on composition and the relationship between lines, shapes, and architectural elements.
We were given a 28-metre-long wall in a corridor leading to the auditorium entrance. The process began with students proposing compositions of lines and shapes that could unite the multitude of different drawing expressions.
The selected proposal from one of the students consisted of straight lines and rectangular white fields. I further developed and adapted the composition and drew the lines onto the wall. The white fields were covered with paper during the drawing process.
The students chose the theme: Nature and Humanity.
They were challenged to draw freely around the theme and create a collaborative wall artwork. Some worked extensively with sketches, while others worked intuitively and directly on the wall. The project encouraged collaborative drawing and became a social and creative process involving talented and enthusiastic young artists.
My artistic contribution in the project:
Communicating art and thematic content. Sharing knowledge about the use of visual elements and techniques in artistic wall work. Adjust and develop a composition in relation to the space and architecture. Inspiring and guiding participants throughout the drawing project.
