Black markers on cardboard boxes
During the autumn of 2023, school classes participated in drawing workshops at Galleri Seilet.
The pupils were shown artworks by Tom Hatlestad and Ai Weiwei and were asked:
What does freedom mean to you in your life?
They wrote reflections and made sketches before drawing directly on cardboard boxes using black markers.
Everyone followed the same rule: The drawing had to begin 10 cm from the corners of the box. This allows the individual drawings to flow into one another when the boxes are stacked together. In this way, each participant’s unique line and visual expression become part of a larger, interconnected image.
The workshops ended with the boxes being brought into public spaces in Oslo. There, the pupils assembled different installations, creating new images and spatial expressions.
The project offers layered perspectives on freedom in society: One can express oneself through one's own line, words, and thoughts, while simultaneously participating in a community and a collaborative process, becoming part of a larger whole.
My artistic contribution in the project:
Communicating art and thematic content. Sharing knowledge about the use of visual elements and techniques. Inspiring and guiding participants throughout the drawing project.
